Project Waves 4 Water part 1

We were in the east coast of the Philippines the past few days and during the last day in town we stopped by a local elementary school to drop off a Waves 4 Water kit for the kids to share! Super stoked to give back to the community. Thank you to Roy Angara, Aliya surf camp crew, Coast Thru life crew and everyone that helped us to make this happen

OUR STORY

A few weeks ago, Ian and I decided to make the pilgrimage back to his homeland in the Philippines in hopes of discovering new career and quality of life opportunities. We decided that we wanted to make this adventure more than just another attempt to self-serve and self-promote, but actually do something that will make a difference in the lives of those in need.

Ironically, just days after booking our flight, Typhoon Nesat struck the tiny archipelago leaving much of Metro Manila and inner farmlands of Luzon flooded. Now, many people are left without many basic necessities, including CLEAN DRINKING WATER!!

That's where WAVES FOR WATER comes in.

Waves For Water (W4W) is a non-profit organization with a simple mission: to get clean water to every single person who needs it.

Through their "Clean Water Couriers", W4W has initiated a program that allows volunteers to successfully set up filtration systems to catastrophic stricken regions around the world.

THE IMPACT

What we are going to achieve is HUGE. One Community Use Filtration System can provide clean drinking water to 100 people per day. If maintained properly, the filters will last for many years. We have purchased TWO Community Use Filtration Systems, but with YOUR help we could purchase more systems and affect more lives!!

WHAT WE NEED & WHAT YOU GET

Our tickets have been booked; two community filters have been purchased ($50 ea). Hell or high water, we're headed to the Philippines!

That's where YOU come in!

Your contribution is a key component to making this whole mission a success. All donations will go directly to assisting Ian and I venture into the heart of these areas who are in desperate need for clean drinking water. If we can get close to our goal before our departure date, we will buy additional filtration systems.

This has been sitting in the polish room waiting to be buffed and I finally got around on doing it. Much different on what I usually ride. This one has a much narrower nose and a bit more roll. Kinda my take of a post modern "pig"

Surprisingly its works pretty good. Need more tip time to get used to the narrower nose.

Ah and yes! this is totally the wrong time of the year for a new log but we know this little place that has perfect peelers!

I shaped this 2 weekends ago knowing that i might be spending some time in the shaping room. This is my first triple stringer blank I've shaped and guess what. Yes its a major pain in the ass! BUT this wont be the last! I actually enjoyed it! I think i will make a double stringer stringer log for my self soon.

Quest for the finless machine...

Its been a year and a half since I made my first finless board. 7'0 x 22 x 3. Carbon laced wrap, big swallow tail, deep single concave with hard edges all the way up. It caught the smallest waves you can imagine BUT it was impossible to sink that rail and gain complete control. I still kept using it. it had its moments but its time for the next step....

A few weeks ago I needed do get away from my orders and do something different. I found an old machined blank and started mowing. All looked great till I was done. ... too much Fing rocker! it was too late to do anything so i glassed it and rode it the next day. Unfortunatley it sucked! too much rocker! I decided to put a single fin box and see what it would do. Tried it with a Greenough paddle fin and it went OK...

Even Kyle gave it a go...

...time for the next step. I went back to basics and pretty much shaped a foam alaia.

I took it out today on some knee high peelers and actually went great! better than #1 and #2.

This came out to what I imagined but not what I envisioned in the beginning. I wanted this board to be able to catch waves easier and still be on top of the water ala Derek Hynd finless... So Im back to the drawing board tomorrow and see what I can come up with.

I was watching the local news and to my surprise they had a clip of some teeny waves at the point. to my surprise there was a quick glimpse of the board in action.... ok not really much action but i thought it was funny.

Ive been working on this board for a couple of months now and Im finally getting to where I really want it!!

Lots of influence from my original HP fish, Mitten's kiteboard and Tomo's Tail designs.

I used this board for the sacred craft show last weekend and I finally convinced myself to take her out. Padded and waxed up, first sesh would be at local spot. shoulder high + with the funky section just where the creek has been flowing.

I had to shake off the foam and sanding dust on the first 2 waves, As soon as my feet started putting some grooves. It started to feel at home.

As I moved to the inside and started picking off the swing wides I was damn stoked! The added tail rocker + experimental fin placements just loosened up the board perfectly without sacrificing drive and trim.

Gonna try different fins tomorrow. The plastic fins starts to wash out a bit.

One of my customers sent me a reply to one of my emails with this link. Honestly I did not even bother opening it. I thought it was one of those "surf" videos again.

It took me a few days to go through my emails and decided .. what the heck, lets see what this is all about.

As I sat watching it, it didnt take long to feel inspired and moved by this short film. Its one of those films that you just try to anticipate the next moment. Its inspiring to see guys like Michael on how they dial in their everyday living... cutting all the bullshit and unneeded things we do.

There are so many things in life I bitch and moan about and sometimes I forget the small things that makes life beautiful.

Sean Mullen captured this in everyway I can imagine. It couldn't be more perfect.

Twin Arc Tail

This is one of the new boards for 2010. Its a combination of a few boards that has been a best seller/ magic boards for us the past few years. Ive combined the Brick outline and HP fish outline and added a split in the tail to create two planing areas to flex independently. I cleaned up the entry rocker for smoother paddling and create a faster water entry. I added some tail kick to tighten up and quicken your turns. All this paired up with a deeper single concave for added lift and rail to rail power...

As for the tail design, this was a combination of a kite board Mr. Campbell made a while back and a touch of Mr. Thomson crazy tail splits. Id like thank them both for the inspiration on this design.

Carbon contraptions + Resin X = Woa!

Matt Campbell of C3d industries/Resin X came out to the factory for a few days to work one some new things with us along with trying a few new tweaks to his unbelievable product.

This is one of those projects we worked on. The shape was an old shape from last year sitting and waiting for a miracle. I dusted it off and gave it a few tweaks. As far as glassing schedules, we used a 6oz/carbon laced bottom with a 4.Xoz full carbon deck + 4oz E glass, a pretty solid construction and stiff flex pattern.

This was a great experiment since we already know how good the flex charactersitics are on a board glassed with standard E/Warp/S cloth boards and Resin X. Carbon fiber as you know is a very stiff but strong product when used with epoxy..... surprisingly with Resin X, the Carbon acts much differently than what I thought, its stiff but positive stiff and still strong. You can stand on this thing on the floor and have the deck not touch the ground.

The positive "stiff" flex is very different than anything I've ridden. Its something I cant put into words.. it just gives me a big smile when you lay this thing on rail....

This board is available to Demo if you are around our area. Be awake since this is a protoype Its not the prettiest thing in the word. We will be doing some more of this and see how people liek them... Keep checking in on updates about this construction!

Ive had such great results with my personal Channel bottom Brick lately . I managed to convinced one of my team guys to try one. So far so good. He's been super stoked on how responsive and fast this little shits are!

Since we moved in the new shop my computer time, photography and surfing has been cut really short, good thing and bad. Doing 10-12 hour days the past 2 months has been pretty grueling but rewarding. Now I have the freedom to do things I want and how I want it.

Still playing catch up on some old orders but here and there Ill squeeze in somethings that has been boiling in my head for awhile.

Been playing around in the new shaping room. This is the same template as the"rocketishhh thing" I had in the classified. Changed the tail a bit, flatish concave deck, some weird lines in the bottom and wala... Test drive will be after thanksgiving. Cant wait!

Sunday was a special day for Carla. It was her first day back in the water from her knee injury. She is not standing up just yet but shes been paddling everyday since. She even sneaks in a few tiny ones prone on that 11ft beast!! It has been a very tough journey for her and I know she's stoked to get back in the ocean. Its only going to get better from here. Its just a matter of time till shes surfing better than she ever has! Super stoked for her.
